Itinerary
Day 1. Guatemala City - Antigua Guatemala (Saturday suggested)
Today you are met at the airport and drive to Antigua Guatemala for 1.5hrs. Whereyou stay for 2 nights.
Day 2. Antigua Guatemala & Cultural Experience
You will be met by a representative of Tours Atitlan at your hotel, for a unique cultural experience of Antigua Guatemala. Walk around Antiuga, photograph old churches, the main park and join a local food tour After the tour travel back to your hotel with plenty of time to relax or explore on your own.
Day 3. Travel to Sacapulas (Homestay with local family)
8:00am - Our driver and private guide will meet at your hotel, then travel for 1.5hrs to the famous market of Chichicastenango, a colorful market in Central America. Explore the market with your guide, take colorful photos of the vegetable and textiles market. See local shamans performing rituals in the main plaza and finalize the tour at the cemetery for a unique travel experience. Soon you will join lunch at a local restaurant in Chichicastenango then continue with the journey to a small town called Sacapulas, a famous little village on the side of the river where locals produce black salt. You will stay a local family home, join dinner with them and make your own tortillas!
Day 4. Mayan Market of Chajul & Overnight in Acul
8:00am - You will have a delicious fresh breakfast some great coffee prior to continue with your journey. 1.5hrs away a colorful and extraordinary market awaits for you. Chajul is a famous village located on the east of Nebaj, very untouch mayan community. This was the main epicenter during the civil war in Guatemala. Again our guide and driver will scort you and transfer you to Acul a cheese farm locate on the west side of Nebaj.
Day 5. Free Day at Leisure
Today you will enjoy a free day at the hacienda at the cheese farm, with an option for a horseback riding experience, explore the little village of Acul, or do our 1hrs. drive to the Waterfal of Chichel or Santa Avelina.
Day 6. Travel Lake Atitlan & Chichicastenango Market
Today leave at 8:00am for the famous market of Central America. Chichicastenango, the bright colors of the local outfit will capture your first impressions, all the fabrics that and decoration are just very impressive, the main catholic church and the Mayan rituals that are performed right on the main stairs of the church, flowers all over and smell of incense from the rituals makes this trip a unique experience. Your guide will lead you and see all the highlights of this stunning market. From here your trip continues to Lake Atitlan just about 1 hours. Spend two nights in Lake Atitlan.
Day 7. Experience Lake Atitlan by private local boat
Guests are picked up from their hotel & transfer to San Juan La Laguna Village where they visit a local textile cooperative to see the back strap loom in use and to see how they still dye with natural dyes. Guests also visit the home and workshop of local naïf painters before boarding the boat onto Santiago Village for lunch. After lunch guests will walk with their guide to find the house where the Maya God Maximon is living. Once with Maximon you may see local shaman performing rituals for local people and if you wish you can ask your guide to help you hire the services of a shaman for you to have a personal ceremony performed. At the end of the tour continue by boat back to you hotel.
Day 8. Travel back to Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala & Mayan Ruins
9:00am - Today, you'll travel with your private bilingual guide and driver 1.5hrs from Lake Atitlan to Iximche, a pre-Columbian Mayan Archeological Site, once the first capital of Guatemala. Here, you'll see ball courts, temples and one of Guatemala’s most important ceremonial centers surrounded by nature. After a relaxed walk into this wonderful site, our guide and driver will transfer Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala.
Day 9. Travel back home
Depending on your flight departure our driver will transfer you to the Airport and travel back home.
